Today I had to tell my daughter to hold back on her writing a bit.
During a parent/teacher conference today, I was shown a short story by daughter (a fifth grader) wrote that was several pages long only to be told that the teacher was concerned over the possible inappropriateness of some content. After reading some of it, it was nothing that isn't seen on network television and came to the conclusion that there was nothing wrong with it compared to other media.
What the teacher meant to say was that HE felt it was inappropriate for the grade level. I debated the argument stating that by boycotting her work in a way he was ultimately trying to shut down her own creativity during school.
I had to tell my daughter to tone it back, and realize who she is writing it for...a teacher and the school system. I had to be a hypocrite, as someone who makes some of his income from writing and publishing, to scale back her creativity from adults and others ostracizing her because she likes ghost stories and cautionary tales.
Today I had the worst conversation I have ever had with my kid so far, and it was to tell her that she couldn't be like her daddy quite yet.
